Colin, I looked at the syntax of the single files stored by Thunderbird. They appear to be straight-forward text files which follow a particular format. It may be possible to parse those raw files out to individual extracts if you wish.
If you load it in a decent editor, like Notepad++, you can see the format. If you identify the start and end of each message, you could write even some VFP code to parse it out.
