Children get predispositions from their biological parents. Now, it's not 100% pre-determined that a father with highly undesirable traits will produce a similar child. But certainly violence and chemical imbalances in a father can be passed down. So think about this again - do you really think it's fair for a woman to lose the choice of who fathers her child?

Christianity has a pretty sorry history when it comes to recognizing the relationship between mother and child. It's mostly about father and child. So that explains the incredibly insensitive, chauvinist, sexist, patriarchal, and even misogynist attitudes. That's one of the reasons I have some intellectual sympathy for Judaism - it recognizes the bond between mother and child in far more realistic terms.
