>>>My eyesight isn't very good (
at best correctable to 20-40 using corrective lenses), that without my glasses I would have trouble telling apart folks from the photos as seen on the message board (everyone looks like a fuzzy blob)... Not sure if my myopia (coupled with just as much astigmatism) has reached Mr Magoo levels or not...

>>Have you considered laser eye surgery? In many cases it can bring you to 20/20 or better w/o any corrective lenses. If your combination of myopia and astigmatism is severe it can often bring you to a point where moderate corrective lenses can give you 20/20 or better.

>Laser Eye Surgery! I can't have that. My cornea is so thin there's a chance my eyes will break when I sneeze. Less impressive technology than I thought. Why not fix the LENS, not the cornea?
Well, if you're not a candidate, you're not a candidate. It worked spectacularly (no pun intended!) well for me and for (probably by now) millions of others.
Some problems are caused by irregularities in the cornea, so for those the best solution is to fix the cornea. For others such as myopia, changing cornea geometry is preferable to trying to surgically adjust the depth of the eye.
The lens is a moving part, already amazingly good at compensating for varying focal lengths and some eye irregularities. I imagine there is research aimed at modifying it but it will be a greater challenge than with a relatively fixed structural element such as the cornea.
Lenses are completely replaced in cataract surgery and these days there are major improvements in the replacement lenses. But unless you have cataracts or some other serious lens problem that's probably not an option for you.
