I agree it is too complicated. So I decided for now to deploy the ASP.NET 4.0 in a different Site on the customer web server. The customer is already running the ASP.NET 2.0 application on the same web server. So now they will just run each app in a different site; which should not be a problem. Once I convert the 2.0 application to 4.0 (which won't be simple recompile since I want to bring it up the up-to-date browsers by way of Bootstrap 3) I will move both apps to the one site. Just to make the maintenance a little less burdensome.
