>>Michael is and always has been a jerk. His incredible athletic ability and championships obscured that for a long time to lots of people, including me. But now that he is no longer playing it is clear he is nobody's idea of a nice guy. He is an assassin. And that's part of why he was so successful.

>So why can people celebrate "jerkness" in him, and not in others?
I don't think it was celebrated, it just wasn't known to people who didn't know him personally.
I agree with your point about Brendan Eich, BTW. He should not have been forced out of Mozilla over his private views. But I think the commissioner, and the owners we know darned well he had lined up before he made the announcement banning Donald Sterling, acted appropriately given the embarrassment and anger he brought to the league. His racist comments directly impacted the workplace.
Here is a hypothetical for you, which may be a stretch. What if you found out your legislator secretly hated Iowans and it came out, in whatever manner? Maybe he or she told an interviewer Iowans are a bunch of ignorant pig farmers. Would you want them to continue being your representative?
