A couple of my pet peeves:

- in recent years the vast overuse of the word "so"

- awkward constructs in a misguided attempt to appear sophisticated e.g. "most well-known" instead of "best-known"

I don't think there are many editors still working today. Cost-cutting is leading to reporters and journalists editing themselves, or else "news" organizations are relying on citizen journalists or bloggers who may never have heard of the concept.
