Actually it's the least bad translation of our proverb, "platiš na mostu ili platiš na ćupriji" - "pay on the bridge or pay on the ćuprija" - where the last word also means the bridge, but is a turkish loanword. The above is what I came up with when I needed the equivalent in english.
