I am sure (if their state operates as other states of USA) they have some discounts for "safe" drivers and maybe "older" drivers. But the guy who is going to live their is only 27 years old. And he won't be making a lot of money. So even $5K a year for auto insurance will be quite high for him. We have 2 cars and pay about $1300 a year for auto insurance (in Massachusetts); which is much more reasonable.
I was hoping that someone who actually lives in Detroit will see my message and chime in.

It looks like auto insurance price in UK is similar to the USA; so if I learn English maybe I can move there for retirement :)
