Thank you, Ed and George, for your very relevant suggestions. I've printed out George's FAQ.

As it turns out, the Book Archive guy (who doesn't work for M$ and therefore is very responsive) called me back yesterday to say that the "Microsoft Win32 Programmer's Guide" had just come in. It was a little more than $20 so I went ahead and ordered it.

When my cash flow improves I will seriously consider and MSDN subscription.

Between your help and the book I ordered I'm sure I will find the info I need.
