I've known some servers at restaurants over the years who have done pretty well. Just like with anything else, the ones who work harder and are more conscientious are going to do much better in tips, get more hours, etc.
That's true. Back in 1980, I tended bar at a Ramada Inn that had a live band each night and a big local trade. I was making minimum wage (which back then was $4.25/hour) and made at least $60 a night in tips. 35 years ago, that was pretty good money.
I made good tips because I really hustled - I never stood still and I never did just one thing at a time. Back then you could still smoke in bars. I would pick up and wash empty glasses and empty ash trays (wiping them out with a used bar napkin) while taking drink orders. I suppose that it didn't hurt that I have an extremely good memory <s>.
That is probably why I expect a lot from servers when I go out. Been there, done that, know what it takes.
(And sadly, newer IRS rules on tips and wages have made it even tougher for servers. As is usually the case, it's the government and not the market system that adversely affects people).
That was one of the great things about working for tips when I did it. Back then, it was all tax free - you didn't have to report anything to the IRS as long as you were making at least minimum wage.
