Peter,

It’s going through DOS, so I think you have to turn off the Spool MSDOS print jobs setting. Since you’re working on this, perhaps you can check it out and let us know.

Also, the backstroke is required if you’re in Long fielname directory.

I remembered clearly there were 2 or 3 characters that couldn’t get through to the printer with the ??? command, something like CHR(129). I’ve documented it somewhere, but it’s really like in the haystack now. Will post it on UT if I find it.

Wondering what had changed, I noticed that there was a hole on the shelf over the workstation where a local laser printer had been sitting earlier in the week. I changed the default printer to a network printer but it still didn't print. I looked in the spool list for that printer and I could see my test print job but it would not follow the Novell capture statement which redirected output to the ALPS.

Remembering your suggestion, I said to her, "Give me fifteen minutes and I'll try something." I went back to my development computer and rewrote my spooler program to use FOPEN and FWRITE instead of ???. It seemed to work with my local printer. I brought the program back to the workstation in the machine room and tried again. Hurray! It worked!

My pleasure.
