I just spoke with one of our clients that had a similar issue. In his case it was a ransomware virus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ransomware) that left a txt and html file in the directory with payment instructions. These viruses will encrypt data files to render them useless unless you pay to have them decrypted. Hopefully they have a working backup (and not a backup that was overwritten with the encrypted files).
