You can try SELECT...INTO CURSOR crsrTable NOFILTER, and VFP will be quite happy. (At least, 5 will -- I'm not sure about 3.)

In 3.0, I was using SELECT company as company,address,city,country,etc. FROM...

Having at least one "as" clause in the SELECT forces Visual FoxPro to create a cursor. Also, adding a .T. field was doing the job and there was also another trick discussed two weeks ago.
