It seems that I was learning english in all the wrong places. Last year, about 45 years after I spoke my first sentence in this language, I learned that kid is, actually, offspring of a goat. This unscholarly use of the word to mean a child is so prevalent that it never occurred to me that it may have a previous meaning.
