>>This is a violent place. Crazy people here are more likely to do violent things than they are in say, Switzerland, because violence is a basic fact of life here.

Fair enough. So you agree with criminologist Lonnie Athens who said that the violence has more to do with "violent socialization" meaning the behaviors and expectations with which people grow up, than with insanity. Attributing it to craziness avoids the need for soul-searching, whereas violent socialization is a social criticism that doesn't win any votes. So you're going to keep seeing slogans and easy answers like "gun control." I would have to say that walking into Cabalas to buy the largest handgun in existence ostensibly to shoot deer, is a twilight zone concept for the Europeans.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
