Maybe you had a specific situation or settings, but generally what Victor said is true. Hangouts (at least generally) has better video and audio quality.

One of the biggest frustrations I have with Skype is that the screen sharing doesn't perform well at all. My main client uses skpye (I can't get them into GoToMeeting or Hangouts), but the screen sharing is so bad that we use join.me for basic screen sharing.
