I am confused. In one sentence you say that there is "no 'y'" and in another you say that you can hear it. My experience is opposite; I see that French text books do have the 'y' sound but I cannot hear it. Michel, who is a native French speaker said that the 'y' is not pronounced. But perhaps there is a small difference in french Canadians and french of France pronunciations.
