But I can’t seem to hear the ending “y” when I listen to native speaker(s) in almost all cases of “ai”/”ay”. My question is, do you guy pronounce the “y” so lightly that my aging ears can’t hear it? Or the way you speak is not the way the dictionaries indicate and you simply drop the ending “y”?

My experience is opposite; I see that French text books do have the 'y' sound but I cannot hear it. Michel, who is a native French speaker said that the 'y' is not pronounced. But perhaps there is a small difference in french Canadians and french of France pronunciations.

One of my best friends is a Canadian from Montreal; English speaking. He studied French many years in school and obviously has been exposed to French speaking people for many years (although he lives in the USA since 80s). He says he understands French better in Paris than in Canada :)
