I am using different VM's for more and more of my dayly stuff, and a big backup disk for those VM. Skipping the install into a separate path a I did turn of the century with multiple OS installs on physical machines, but have a singular mapping into data. Make-do work for sure, but less PITA than what you are expiriencing...
