>>In the last day I've spoken to two retired U.S. captains, one active captain, and a civilian contractor - all four state that while the Swiss are very prepared, have special forces, a strong intelligence effort, etc. - they also benefit from our bases in nearby countries.

Nobody has invaded or even tried to invade Switzerland since the French took over in 1798.

Since WWII when the Nazis intended to invade Switzerland as they did Great Britain, Switzerland's strategy was simple: any Alpine crossing would be so expensive that it would be another of those Pyrrhic victories. ;-) That's the benefit of being surrounded by big mountain ranges or oceans. The US enjoys the same, FWIW- any invasion of the US mainland by a credible opponent would be disastrously expensive- and what would you do on arrival?!

Before claiming paternity, better to decide why somebody would want to invade and via what route.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
