You will never guess who I was recently friends with for a while. Sarah Lyall. After she returned from years in London as the Times's UK reporter I sent her a fan note, nothing more than that. Months later I received an email from her. She was trying to contact another Michael Beane (sadly there are more than one of us) who she met at the Olympics in Sochi, looking for a contact on the American ski jumping team for an article. She is as nice a person as you could hope to meet. I had no idea how old she was or what she looked like. My mental image was of a 60ish dowager. Boy, was that wrong. She recently separated from her long time husband. The men of NYC must be in a frenzy.
