Michel,
David F. explained the angle bracket problem, but there are two other items that make it easier to handle the HTML. And, of course, every message seen on the UT IS HTML, even it it's just text.

1. If you wish to use the angle brackets to show code or 'grins', then simply add a space around the text < grin >

2. At the bottom of each UT message you enter is a button (added about 2 weeks ago) which allows you to preview how your message will look in HTML. It's a good habit to take a look at your messages before hitting the SEND button. Even if all your HTML is correct you may catch a spelling error or other problem. After checking how the message will look, use your browser's Back command to return to the message and send (or correct) it.
