>We are trying to convert over from an old file server which had Novell running on it to a Linux Ubuntu server via samba. My coworker got our VFP exe running on the server, but it seems as though sparatic freezes are occuring when testing with one user back and forth on the same two records. When he watches the utilizations and such on the Linux server it shows nothing to give an idea as to what is randomly hanging it up. Has anyone ever ran into this before and could give us some good tweaks or ideas to try to get our VFP program running smoother than it does on Novell on an older server? Thanks in advance.

A number of years ago I'd replaced our aging Novell server with a Linux server (running a openSUSE 11.0 distro). So far it's been working reasonably well. The thing that took a little while to straighten out were the directory and file permissions (mainly having to keep in mind how Unix-style security works and how that would map into file access at the Windows level) -- first few weeks I was making adjustments to the ownership by "chown" on various directories to appropriate groups. Once I'd gotten that straightened out, it's been working fine w/o me performing many tweaks. The only problem right now that I'm working on is the occasional "hiccup" that I'm seeing from one of the Win7 workstations, which only seems to happen when I'm in the VFP6 IDE (on random occasions it ends up behaving as if network connection is unavailable -- usually when I try to browse the folder in Windows Explorer, it does appear to reconnect, but it's already too late for the VFP IDE, which is now in an error state, so I'm usually forced to close it using Task Manager).
