I caught that word.

I have an almost impossibly high standard for justifying the killing of people - our GI's or other people, I admit.
I've seen it up close and it's horrible.

One of the many reasons I liked Ike so much was that he had seen battle at its fiercest and in his account of his actions in WWII - Crusade in Europe - he closed with this observation:
"There is no glory in battle worth the blood it costs."
As soon as he became president he ended the Korean war with a fragile truce that many criticized at the time as appeasement, but he preferred being called an appeaser to having people die. That fragile truce still stands and there are many in his own party who think we should have kept fighting there.
That took real heroism on Ike's part.

The US was in a war frenzy after 9/11 and was thirsting for some kind of retaliation.
That's a dangerous time.

That's when we needed the strong leadership that someone like Ike could have provided.

Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
