I have been watching some of Jimmy Kimmel on the Tonight Show to see what the excitement is about. So far I have been disappointed. This seems like a media illusion. To me he is a pale version of that old geezer David Letterman, even Jay Leno, and definitely of the gold standard, Johnny Carson. Sure, there is a lot of pressure on him, but he seems uncomfortable in his own skin. His jokes are not as funny, his guests are not as interesting, his band is not as good, his sidekick is not as good. He is not nearly as quick on his feet as Dave. The biggest turnoff to me is that unconfident grin he has, like a kid caught trying on dad's clothes.

Dave will be gone next year but he is still the king of late night IMO.
