>>Good that we are both in favor of free markets.
>>It is a lot better for the consumer, and does not have room for this kind of anti-consumer protectionist garbage.

I'm also in favor of world peace, but tragically most attempts to promote it also fail in the real world. Just as globalization is failing in real life because vested interest moochers are endemic. Check out Australia's sugar situation as well: Australia has a Free Trade agreement with the US but faces quotas and tariffs on sugar thanks to US sugar moochers whose valiant efforts cause US consumers to pay at least double the world price for sugar. Those incensed about the possibility of a tax on sugary drinks might like to consider the wider picture: eliminate the mooching and the price of soda should fall even if you impose a 50% sugar tax. ;-)
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
