Yes, that was indeed the problem. Interestingly, in VFP6, it's an empty string and that's what I was checking for. VFP9 correctly returns .NULL. which I was not checking for so switching from VFP6 to VFP9 caused my app to *think* there was an error when there actually was not. In fact, checking the return value is pointless but I was even dumber 10 years ago when I wrote that than I am now.
