Nope. He really wasn't. The Democratic party was in disarray at the time (when isn't it?) and he was at the vanguard of a new, more mainstream, branch who were referred to in shorthand as the New South. He was from a deadass southern state -- you can look it up -- but got some good things done down there and gave a knockout speech at the Democratic convention . And then he was on his way.
This quotation is attributed to several people, Will Rogers among them. "I don't belong to any organized political party. I'm a Democrat."
