IMO John Irving said it best. He said it's drill. You sit down and write your 500 or 1000 words a day and then you're free for the rest of the day. And lucky for all of us, he knew what he was doing.
Of course taste in fiction is personal but Garp knocked me on my ass. I remember exactly when and where I read it. He had written good books before -- personally "Setting Free the Bears" was a favorite -- but Garp went off like a bomb in the book business. IMO his writing has gone bad but no one will ever be able to take that book away from him. Plus he was a wrestler, a recurring theme in his books, along with bears.
