You can check your connection parameters at http://www.connectionstrings.com/

If you're working on a 64-bit Win7 box you need to make sure you use the 32-bit ODBC administrator to set up 32-bit connections compatible with VFP. It's usually C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe.
