Jane,
Is anyone else working on the project? Only one person at a time can have a PJX file open. If you are certain that no-one else is using the project, check to see if it is locked open by your network (if you can temporarily rename it, it isn't locked by someone else).

If it IS locked somehow, you might try opening a new (empty) project as a table and appending from the old PJX also opened as a table.

And finally, you COULD recreate it as you suggested.
