Yes, getting beyond basic survival is a huge step. I agree.
And I don't mean to beat this horse to death, but strong work ethic matters. One of my favorite movies is "Glory Road". There's a scene that I used to relate to my students when I was an instructor. Coach Don Haskins tells his players, "When I was a player, I wasn't the fastest or the strongest or the most talented. But I could win by out-hustling and out-working the competition. I'll teach you that. My way's hard" Classic scene.
