I never had the pleasure of saluting the CIC.
I never got higher than a bird colonel and his return was pretty snappy.
I've seen British officers return a salute with a tip of a riding crop.

Also just curious..is his decision to invade Syria of as much concern to you as the latte salute?

It is to me. No one will die from the latte salute.
