Are you also using Norton Antivirus on NT? Is your SourceSafe database on a different machine from the one on which you're opening the project? If "yes" and "yes", then you have the same problem we did. It's mentioned in a Knowledge Base article somewhere. Anyway, it seems to be a problem with Norton AV (could be NT). We just switched to McAfee and the speed increase is amazing!
