Sadly, MOST people are that dumb (actually, ignorant is more accurate).
Also, a lot of North Americans implicitly trust police (a bit different [I gather] from typical former East Germans :(). Not to mention, in the US many if not most sheriffs are elected officials, so the population knows and voted for them. Again, a little different from the EG experience :/
