Present company excluded, I have to say that my experience in IT management (about 25 years) told me that my odds of success when hiring men programmers were at least 75% better than they were with hiring women.
I always was, and still am, a believer in growing programmers from scratch.
On several occasions I invested thousands training women programmers who left to have babies and never came back.
I trained lots of people who left for a variety of reasons, but the baby risk (if I were still in management and used that term, I'd probably be sued today) just wasn't there for men.
Married men generally were available to work longer hours than were married women.

Fair or not, that was the case and eventually that added stress to some women who left because of it.
However, the women who did hack it out as programmers were generally better managers than men, so I wound up with a majority of male programmers and a majority of female managers.
With a few exceptions, the women made more money.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
