VFP is not very good about checking its Event Loop when in a compute-intensive activity, which is why Task Manager reports it as not responding. Calling DoEvents periodically from within compute-intensive loops will force VFP to examine the Event Loop and respond to Windows Messages, at a cost in performance of the compute-intensive loop.
