The name rang a bell thou, so I Googled it and I am certain I read "How Green Was My Valley" when I was a teen, can't say I remember it thou, but reading the article I see those two books you mentioned are part of a tetrology with it and "Green, Green My Valley Now", I see that the two you mentioned are related to where I lived, I should read them, thanks for the pointer.
I read them all many years ago. IIRC, IMO, the best one's were the first - certainly the more popular.....
