$ is not optimizable, so VFP has to scan the whole table to find occurrences
there are a lot of solutions to optimize in a similar situation
optimized response time are 100x less

It is only a problem using Win7 and especially Win8 PCs when connected to a server containing the tables. In stand-alone Win7 it does not seem to be an issue. Although having said this, I do have clients using Win7 and there does not seem to be an issue... Or maybe they are putting up with the wait.. :)
