The difference is that people who use alcohol responsibly (or pot for that matter) can lecture those who don't. I also lived with a drunk mother for years and know what its like. From Mike's perspective he has no issues (at least there's nobody that can fix them) so it doesn't matter. He'll be dead in a few years from cirrhosis or jaundice, so it doesn't matter unless he wants to change.
