Last time I generated something like that, it was natal charts and zodiacal diagram - with all those special symbols. I generated postscript and converted it into .png using GhostScript, worked really fast. Didn't even consider writing on curved paths, but IIRC that shouldn't be a problem if you're sort of versed in PostScript.
