Well, I did say 'one of the first'. - we've still got a 'Crapper' - installed about 1920 to replace the out-door '4 holer' in the garden (which is still there but doesn't get used much :-} )

Re: John Harington - until I read this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Harington_(writer) I didn't know the origin of the word 'jakes'. Still heard here, especially in the North, but usually 'jaksie'
