>>That's how democracy works. Try sitting in on a few school board meetings in a small US town and you'll see people who would make this fella look semi-normal.

>>Actually, Colbert isn't doing anyone a favor by calling attention to nuts like this.
>>There are huge issues - especially the increasing concentration of wealth- that won't get laughs and while we're laughing no one is addressing them.

>I think people everywhere are becoming more aware of this wealth gap especially amongst the younger generation. Being told to work harder for less by the generation that got very lucky won't work for ever. And as increasing robotics and automation reduce even the lowest paid jobs we need to ask exactly what people are supposed to do.
It's not a new issue.
I recently binged on biographies of Benjamin Franklin. Wow! What a man!
Franklin, one of the most successful business people of his time, lobbied unsuccessfully for a clause in the constitution that limited the wealth that any one individual could accumulate.
He was reacting to the concentration of wealth that he had seen in the British and French monarchies.
His dream was that the US be run by "middling people" - shopkeepers and tradespeople like himself.
Until his death this man who had made historic scientific, political and artistic contributions, signed his name:
"B. Franklin, Printer"
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
