You can do it, but it's not obvious. First, right-click the grid and choose edit. Next, click in the column you want to add the control to (not on the header). You can also just select the column in the drop-down at the top of the properties window.

Now go to your toolbar and select the control you want. Click in the column you want to add it to. You'll see it in the properties sheet, but not in the grid unless you change the column's currentcontrol property.
