Ah, no, sorry, I agree with you about the PLC/VFP, I just had different experience with serial communications, I (probably mis-) read your message as saying that it was unreliable this days with new hardware, and that has not been our experience.

About your question, we only use it as monitoring, and the appeal of serial communications is that is only one way (only using transmit and ground lines), so there is no (should I say minimal?) security danger
