The worse, then. The state machinery takes the best director they have, and give him a free hand to create a masterpiece of emotional manipulation, so the masses will have their evening of catharsis and that neatly directed against the enemy without, so they can forget the betrayal of socialism they live in. I've seen dozens of war movies later, made by just about any european country and the US, and they're made by pretty much the same recipe as set in the Battleship. Burden the audience with anger at what they were doing to us, then let it all burst out in multiple hoorahs when we hit them back. Only the late sixties brought some sober alternate thinking into this and gave us the look of things from the POV of the man on the front and the collaterals, not only of the heroes and commanders.

Which may have been justified at the time, but was then used over and over as means of propaganda during the cold war, and then on TV (see my other reply about CNN).
