The other thing of note is that I am working on plans to go see the KC Royals play next season. This is part of my ongoing project to go to a game at every MLB park. A guy who used to work for me lives there so I have accommodations. He is quite a character so we had our moments. Let's just say he didn't like authority. One of my dumber moves was firing him over the phone. After we got off the phone I asked myself if I was insane, firing a former Marine sniper.

>>Can't argue with that. Let's see if he can keep it going. Lasting power; that's what it's about. To be honest, and I'm not a Dodger fan, I do hope he can. Baseball really needs those sorts of heroes. Baseball, more than any other sport (imho) is about legends and heroes. Don't ask me why, it just is (as I say, imho). Right now, there seem to be few new ones on the horizon. Good players, yes. Maybe even great players, but legend material? Well....

>Re Koufax, a lot of people forget that he only had 5 good seasons. (GREAT GREAT GREAT seasons}. When he came up he was wilder than a bull in mating season. Couldn't find home plate with both hands and a flashlight. And then he had to retire early due to an elbow that was practically falling off. But those good seasons, wow. It is no idle compliment to compare Kershaw to him.

Keep in mind that Koufax was a "bonus baby." Because of the size of his bonus, the Dodgers had to put him on the major league roster right away, so those early years were the ones he'd normally have spent as a minor leaguer being taught what he needed to know.

And the elbow falling off was actually arthritis. He was really young for it.
