There is als a rule to use icons only for often used items. In this sense "Show" on the button / checkbox would do well. I know that this is a waste of space ... :)

Where do I have seen such?

Keepass uses the eclipse
MS Win 8.1 uses an eye
My router uses a checkbox
On 'droid a checkbox button with text is common

I think the eye is intuitive.
