And that's what I did.
We were both fortunate in that respect.
However, not everyone is that fortunate and there's a cost to having people living below a certain standard. John Ryan talks about pitchforks.. that's a bit extreme, but crime rates go up when people live below a certain level and there's a cost to you and me for that.
Here's a personal experience I had that illustrates that point:
A friend (now a retired eye surgeon) and I - we caddied together as college students- were playing golf one day and we had a terrible caddy. The guy had obviously been hitting the booze and was barely able to carry the bags, much less get the pins, rake the traps, etc.
We did our best to help this guy, but he was really bad.
Finally, I let him have it.. and told him to shape up or we'd get another caddy.
My friend pulled me aside and whispered:
"Bill- let up on him. Would you rather that he broke into your house?"
He was right. I shut up and we helped the guy finish the round.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
