For my years in the military from 1970 - 1988, my highest paid year was 24,000. But because I struggled, sacrificed, spent days without sleep, I know live in relative luxury ( way beneath what you would consider luxury), but I'm fine. I have a great job (6 figures) and have no bills, because that was how I was raised. But I'm in the highest part of SSN payin over the last 15 years, so I should max out.
